Introducing the modular FW23 creations

The FW23 collection from Valstar features a comprehensive range of styles made from suede, woven materials and technical fabrics, all of which adhere to our strict Made in Italy manufacturing ethos. But this season’s collection is particularly noteworthy as we’ve pushed further into the realm of technical clothing, a burgeoning category that’s become a necessity in this modern world we live in, and two prime examples are the Modular Valstarino and Modular Overcoat.

Modular clothing refers to garments – in this case, outerwear – designed with interchangeable or detachable components, allowing you to customise its appearance or functionality. Changing the garment's appearance would infer a more fashionable persuasion, whereas changing the garment for functional reasons is reactive for utility and necessity. And, given the seasonal nature of the two Modular styles, that’s to combat fall showers and brisk winter days. We, therefore, believe that the Modular Valstarino and Overcoat are ideal outerwear garments for the modern man who expects his clothes to work hard and adapt to all kinds of situations and conditions.

Regular readers will know all too well that the Valstarino is our flagship model, and this has been the case since its inception in 1935 when we reimagined the A-1 Flight Jacket, a standard issue garment given to United States Army Air Corps pilots, for discerning Milanese gentlemen. By reworking the A1, we became the first company to reinterpret military apparel for the civilian market in a sporty and casual way.

The design is iconic due to its simplicity – as is often the case. In essence, it’s a blouson jacket with a cropped body, and it features a five-button front with ribbed cuffs, hem and a funnel neck, whilst there are two patch pockets on the hips cut with inverted pleats to increase space. To give it modular credentials, there’s a removable liner with a hood made from a quilted nylon fabric, and thanks to the pockets of air trapped within it, this extra layer of defence will help keep you warm and offer water resistance.

The jacket's exterior is constructed from a traditional yet technical three-layer wool flannel fabric bonded with a membrane. As you’d expect from flannel, it has a classic look with a soft handle, but the membrane ensures protection from the elements. It’s the ultimate technical fabric that we’ve used not just for the Modular Valstarino, available in both navy and grey, but for the Modular Overcoat, too.

The Modular Overcoat could be called a modern wardrobe classic, as it’s a single-breasted coat with a clean silhouette that reaches the knees and has two exterior pockets and a hidden button front. Like the Valstarino, though, it has a removable quilted liner with a hood, which, when not needed, can be placed inside your day bag ready for deployment. Dressed up or down, it’s a garment you’ll reach for often each fall/winter season.
